Local Entrepreneur Responds To Housing Need For Elderly

Talladega, AL – July 7, 2006 - The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that by the year 2020, the population of those age 65 and older will increase by 33%. Talladega entrepreneur, Crystal Wesson, recognized the current need and the huge growth potential and launched Gracious Living Retirement Home in 2003. The business is housed in a large, new, well-designed building on the outskirts of Talladega. Gracious Living offers its residents an affordable homelike environment, loving personal attention, and delicious food.

Each resident is assigned to a private room with private toilet facilities. Residents are allowed to bring their own furniture and personal treasures to make the room more homelike. Central bath facilities are large enough to allow supervised bathing if needed. A music room is provided, but most residents prefer to congregate in the TV room. Three well-prepared meals are served each day in the facility dining room. The son of one resident, Charles Belitz of Munford, AL, says, “My 87 year old Mother moved into Gracious Living soon after it opened. I am extremely pleased with their facility and staff. As a retirement home, this is a very affordable alternative when compared with assisted living facilities that I checked.”

AARP’s study “Beyond 50.05 A Report to the Nation on Livable Communities: Creating Environments for Successful Aging” defines a livable community as “one that has affordable and appropriate housing, supportive community features and services, and adequate mobility options…” The city of Talladega and Gracious Living Retirement Residence have combined to form a truly livable community.
